Product tags and metafields

Unoque reads some product information straight from your Shopify admin, so you don't need to set it up product by product in the theme editor:

Benefit chips

Benefit chips are short benefits with a check mark, shown near the price on the product page and under the title on product cards.

To add them, give the product tags that start with "benefit:", followed by the benefit. For example:

  • benefit:Reduces hair fall
  • benefit:Fragrance free
  • benefit:Safe for color-treated hair

Where they show:

  • Product page: all benefit tags, in the Benefit chips block of the Product information section. Add the block if it's missing.
  • Product cards: up to three benefit tags, under the title. To hide them on cards, turn off Show benefit chips in Product cards.

The Benefit chips block also has a Benefits setting. Text you enter there is shown on every product that has no "benefit:" tags. Separate benefits with commas. Leave it empty if your products have different benefits.

Tips:

  • Start the tag with "benefit:", including the colon. Capital letters don't matter, so "Benefit:" works too. A space after the colon is fine.
  • The text after "benefit:" is shown exactly as you write it, so check capital letters and spelling.
  • Keep each benefit to a few words, so chips fit on one line on phones.
  • Only list benefits you can support. Claims about cosmetics and health products are regulated in many countries.

Badges

Badges are small labels on the top corner of product card images. Unoque shows up to two badges on each card:

  • A Sold out badge when no variant is available, or a sale badge when the product is on sale. Turn these on and choose the sale badge style in Product cards.
  • One custom badge from a product tag that starts with "badge:". For example, badge:Bestseller shows "Bestseller", and badge:New shows "New".

Capital letters in "badge:" don't matter, so "Badge:New" works too. If a product has more than one "badge:" tag, the card shows the first one. Choose Top left or Top right in Badge position.

On product cards, the sale badge and the crossed-out compare-at price come from the product's cheapest variant. A card only shows them when that variant's own compare-at price is higher than its price, so other variants' compare-at prices don't create a sale that isn't there.

Star ratings

Unoque shows star ratings from the standard product reviews metafields: reviews.rating and reviews.rating_count. Many product review apps can save ratings to these metafields. Check your app's settings, or ask the app's developer.

Ratings show:

  • On product cards, when Show product rating is on in Product cards.
  • On the product page, in the Product rating block.
  • In the Featured product section, in its Product rating block, and in the quick view.

Stars show only when a product has both a rating and a review count above 0. Products without reviews show no stars.

To show the reviews themselves, use your review app's app block. Add it to the Product information section, or add an Apps section below it.

Only show ratings from real customer reviews. Don't type ratings into these metafields yourself.

Concern and category tiles

The home page has two Collection list sections: one for shopping by category, and one for shopping by concern, such as acne or hair fall. Each tile links to a collection.

To set up concern tiles:

  1. Decide on a short list of concerns, for example "Hair fall", "Dandruff", "Acne" and "Pigmentation".
  2. Create a collection for each concern in your Shopify admin under Products > Collections. An automated collection with a condition such as "Product tag is equal to Hair fall" stays up to date as you tag new products.
  3. Add a collection image to each collection, or use Custom image in the tile.
  4. In the theme editor, select the Collection list section and choose a collection in each Collection block.
  5. Use Custom title for short tile names.

See Collection list for all settings.

Tip: concern tags can be plain tags, such as "Hair fall". They don't need a prefix, and they don't show on product cards.

Different content on each product

Metafields store extra information for each product, such as key ingredients, how-to steps or a before and after image. Connect them to the product page in the theme editor, and each product shows its own content.

See Show different content on each product for the steps.

Set it all up step by step

  1. Plan your tags. Write down your benefits, your badges and your concerns. Keep the wording short and consistent.
  2. Tag your products. Open each product in your Shopify admin and add tags in the Tags field, for example benefit:Fragrance free, badge:New and Hair fall. To tag many products at once, use the bulk editor or a product CSV import.
  3. Check the product page. In the theme editor, open a tagged product and make sure the Benefit chips block is in the Product information section.
  4. Check product cards. Open a collection page and check the badges and chips. Turn on Show product rating if you use a review app.
  5. Connect your review app. Turn on its option to save ratings to the product reviews metafields. Then add the Product rating block to the product page.
  6. Build concern collections. Create automated collections that use your concern tags, and add them to a Collection list section.
  7. Add metafields. Create product metafield definitions for ingredients and how-to steps, fill them in, and connect them on the product page.
  • If you add a Tag filter in the Search & Discovery app, customers see your tags as written, including "benefit:" and "badge:". Use metafield or product type filters for a cleaner list.
  • Predictive search looks at tags, so a search for "hair fall" can find products tagged benefit:Reduces hair fall.
