Custom code
Most changes in Unoque don't need code. Sections, blocks and theme settings cover colors, fonts, layouts and content. Before you edit code, check the theme settings and the FAQ.
Our custom code policy
- Custom code isn't supported. We can't write, review, fix or maintain code that you or someone else adds to the theme. This includes code in Custom Liquid sections and blocks, Custom CSS, and edits to theme files.
- The tutorials on this page aren't supported. We share them as examples. If something goes wrong after you follow them, remove the code to return to the original behavior.
- Edited themes are harder to help with. If you report a problem in a theme with edited code, we may ask you to check whether it also happens in an unedited copy of Unoque.
- Code edits aren't carried over in theme updates. Changes you make in the theme editor are kept. Changes to theme files are not. See Theme updates.
For changes that need code, we suggest you hire a Shopify Partner. You can find one in the Shopify Partner Directory (opens in a new tab).
Before you change any code
Always duplicate your theme first:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
- Next to Unoque, select the ... button, then Duplicate.
- Make your changes in the copy. Preview them before you publish the copy.
If something goes wrong, your original theme is still there, unchanged.
Safe ways to customize
These options keep your code in the theme editor, where you can see it, edit it and remove it without touching theme files.
Custom Liquid section
Adds a block of code anywhere on a page that has sections.
- In the theme editor, select Add section > Custom Liquid.
- Paste your code in Liquid code.
- Choose Make section full width and Color scheme if needed.
- Select Save.
Use it for embed codes from services that don't have an app, such as a booking widget or a survey form.
Custom Liquid block on product pages
The Product information and Featured product sections both have a Custom Liquid block. Use it to add something next to the product details, for example a line that shows a product metafield.
Example: show a "Best for" line from a single line text metafield named custom.best_for.
- Create the metafield definition in Settings > Metafields and metaobjects > Products, with the namespace and key
custom.best_for. - Fill it in on your products.
- In the theme editor, open a product page, select Product information, and add a Custom Liquid block.
- Paste this code:
{%- if product.metafields.custom.best_for != blank -%}
<p class="text-sm">Best for: {{ product.metafields.custom.best_for | escape }}</p>
{%- endif -%}
- Drag the block to where you want it, and select Save.
Products without a value show nothing. This example isn't supported. For most text like this, the Text block connected to a metafield does the same job without code. See Product page.
Custom CSS
Shopify's theme editor has a Custom CSS setting in each section and in theme settings. Use it for small style changes, such as a different font size in one section. CSS added to a section applies to that section only.
Example: make headings in one section smaller.
h2 {
font-size: 1.5rem;
}
This example isn't supported.
Editing theme files
You can edit theme files in Online Store > Themes > ... > Edit code. Only do this in a duplicate of your theme, and only if you're comfortable with Liquid, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
- Keep a note of every file and line you change, so you can make the same changes again after a theme update.
- Don't edit files in the theme to fix an app. Ask the app's developer instead.
- For anything larger than a small change, hire a Shopify Partner.
